Olive Branch Newsletter For April 2001
MissionsBy Kurt Lambrecht To my Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings once again! Well, it looks like Spring has finally made it to Omaha, even though, if you look hard enough, you can still find small piles of snow and ice in places that don't get too much sunlight. And what do we end up with as soon as it gets warm? Thunderstorm and Tornado warnings, as we had this morning! Welcome to Nebraska. But at least they have taken the rain out of the forecast fore the Lawnmower Clinic on Saturday (for now, anyway!), so hopefully everything will go on schedule. Have you ever noticed how easy it is for the little things in life to get to you? The guy that cuts you off while driving, the co-worker that picks that exactly wrong moment to mess up the project you have been working on for hours, the person in the grocery store with a cart full of one billion items and insists on being first, though you have only two things and all the express lanes are stacked up till next Wednesday (I'm starting to sound like that old comedy routine of The Old Philosopher!)? We have all had days like that. Well, I had one like that the other day, and it aggravated me for days. But finally, I remembered what time of the year it is, and what holiday it is close to. Now Christ was doubted by his own people, sold out to his enemies who were at one time his peers as teachers and scribes, tortured, whipped, humiliated, and eventually put to death on a cross. Now, pretty much any one of us that that had happened to would say "Good riddance to bad rubbish.", and head on up (or down as the case may be) to our eternal reward, but Christ did not. After all he had gone through at the hands of men, he still came back, feeling that the people of this world were worth saving, and making the ultimate sacrifice for. When one looks at all of that, if Jesus could go through all of that and make it through with their faith intact, well I guess I can too. Well, onto the announcements. I would like to thank everyone for their help for our April Fool on Hunger last Sunday, and I know Pearl Food Pantry appreciates every bit of help it gets. To get us back on our Last Sunday of the month of April will be our next big Push for Pearl Pantry, and that gives everyone time to get ready to bring canned goods or a little bit of cash to assist the Pantry in feeding those without the means to do so themselves. And remember even that 36 cents in the bottom of your pocket can help, since any money they get can be multiplied twelve-fold. And CROP Walk is only 6 months away, or so the information I received the other day in the mail says, but leaves us plenty of time to prepare. As for Missions, we are coming down to the deadline on the International Food Fair. Since this Sunday would not give everyone involved enough warning, and the next would be Easter Sunday, the Missions Committee will meet the Sunday after Easter (the 22nd, if I can still do simple math at 3 in the morning) in the chapel right after church. Let me know this Sunday if this will clash with anyone's schedule. And there is still the brick for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to purchase as well, and other projects on the way.
Well, that about wraps s up for now. I look forward to seeing you all in church over the next couple of Sundays. As always, I remain, Kurtis W. Lambrecht, Hunger and Missions Committee Chairperson
