Dog Obedience Class by Mako Jacobs

Olive Crest will be the site of a new class that will begin on January 14th at 7:00 p.m. The class is an outreach to our community's dogs and their families. Mako Jacobs will be teaching a basic obedience class that will run every Tuesday for eight weeks.

Mako is a Special Education teacher at Adams Elementary School. She has trained a professional therapy dog, which is also a certified service dog that goes to "work" every day with her. Mako has also been teaching basic obedience for the past two years. Recently she became a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluator through the American Kennel Club.

The class will focus on proper manners that will make the family dog a well-behaved and obedient member of the family. A well-mannered dog is a joy to live with and expands the opportunities in which the dog can be with their "owner".

Mako will be donating a portion of the class fee to the daycare. Mako and her husband, Rick, have four children that love going to school because of the positive experiences that they have had at our daycare.

Mako will be using the remaining money to fund a trip to Mobile, Alabama in which she will be learning more about service dogs, using therapy dogs, and other issues relating to those living with disabilities. She will be evaluating dogs hoping to earn their CGC and presenting her research on using a therapy dog in the school/classroom.
